At a drive-thruCOVID testing facility, passengers and drivers can get tested without getting out of their vehicles. This innovative testing procedure has helped communities curb the spread of virus that might occur at a walk-in testing facility.

Drive-thru is fast, convenient, and as reliable as walk-in and at-home tests. It has also proven successful in meeting the high testing demand. A large number of people can be tested quickly without worrying about SOP violation or virus transmission.

HOWEVER, the COVID-19 test conductors are required to wear proper PPE, masks, face shields, and gloves as they have to collect nasal or oral samples. COVID drive-thru testing has undeniably helped the government improve surveillance and reduce the burden on emergency rooms.

Here’s a complete rundown of what happens at a COVID drive-thru testing facility and how to go about your upcoming visit.

Arrival at a Drive-Thru COVID Testing Center

COVID-19 testing practices ramped up as the pandemic raged through Miami. People were encouraged to stay home but get immediately tested upon experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms.

In an effort to increase the testing capacity, many state and private medical organizations started setting up drive-thru testing facilities. Several private labs played an important role in providing adequate testing resources such as PPE, testing kits, and sample storage units.

When a car passenger arrives at a COVID drive-thru testing center, they’re guided by road signs. This keeps the vehicle queue in order and maintains discipline. A series of cones are set up guiding the cars toward the testing booth. You’re advised to keep your windows rolled up and wear masks at all times.

Screening Point

There might be more than one screening points at a drive-thru testing center. The first one is usually set up to conduct a thorough screening process. Prior to screening, you’re asked to show your appointment receipt and doctor’s confirmation. Moving further, you’ll have to show your ID photo and insurance card as well. This completed the screening procedure.

Getting Tested

The last part is to get tested. Testing is usually done at a separate booth where a lab technician awaits your arrival. He’ll ask you to roll down the window just a little bit. You would have to tilt your head back, and the lab worker will insert a swab inside your nose. Once they’re done taking samples, you can roll up the window and drive off.

The collected samples are stored in well sterilized and temperature-controlled container. They’re sent to the lab for detection of possible COVID-19 viral RNA.

Drive thru COVID testing first emerged in Korea where mass testing was implemented as a primary strategy to check the transmission rate. The idea was to promote testing for fast and effective prevention of the pandemic. Over time, the American Government also adopted the strategy and it has now become one of the easiest COVID testing practice.

Most medical tests require you to be prepared beforehand. Similarly, the COVID-19 testing procedure also requires you to take a few measures before the test.

Luckily, you don’t have to fast beforehand or avoid any specific activities that might influence the test results. However, there are a few aspects you ought to be careful about. Here’s how anyone can prepare for a Covid-19 test.

Things to Keep for Your COVID-19 Test

These are some of the items to keep with you when going for a COVID-19 test:

  • Put on a mask to cover your face at all times and prevent catching or spreading the virus.

  • Keep some forms of identification, including your ID card and driver’s license.

  • If you have health insurance, keep relevant information.

  • Some testing sites might require prescriptions and referrals.

  • There might be waiting time due to long queues, so pack a bottle of water and some healthy snacks.

  • Any of your required medication or prescriptions.

  • Any handheld device or a book to keep you occupied during the long waiting times.

  • If you’re bringing children along, bring some toys or tings to keep them entertained.

  • Phone charger, to ensure that you don’t run out of batteries and stay connected with the online world.

What to Avoid for Your COVID-19 test

Some of the things you shouldn’t be doing when going for a COVID-19 test:

  • Since, there’s a risk of contracting COVID-19 at the testing centers, only those that are getting tested for COVID-19 should come along with you, including children.

  • Getting tested too quickly. It would be best if you waited at least five days or so for symptoms to develop before you get tested.

  • Heading to a hospital emergency room for testing.

You may head to hospital emergency if:

  • You’ve already been tested positive for Coronavirus.

  • You have difficulty breathing, along with persistent chest pain, leaving a blue tint on your lips or face due to a lack of oxygen.

Book A Session

Booking a COVID-19 testing session is one of the most commonly recommended options. Most testing centers already have large queues, and you might get stuck in traffic. Wouldn’t it be convenient if the testing session was at your home, from the convenience of your living room? You can actually get tested at home, with a professional coming in for either antigen, PCR, or antibody test.

Not leaving home, in this case, is ideal, as it helps minimize the chances of you contracting the virus among the large crowd.

As with any pandemic, COVID-19 has had its fair share of hoaxes and myths. This has spread a lot of misinformation and paranoia among the general public. With regards to testing, there are many statements being thrown around which are simply not true.

Here’s all that you need to know about the myths around COVID-19 testing and the truth behind it all.

The Test is Painful

Getting a cotton bud swabbed around your nose or throat might not be the most fun experience, but by no means is it painful. You might cough or feel ticklish around your throat or have the urge to sneeze if your nose is being swabbed for a sample. In any case, it’s completely normal to feel this way.

The PCR or swab test is generally less than a minute long, depending on how cooperative you are. Even the antibody test, where blood is drawn from the body, doesn’t hurt a lot or take much time.

The Tests Are Completely Accurate

The simple reality is that no test will be completely accurate all the time, with human error being the major contributor to why tests fail or not work out properly as imagined. A common issue that’s observed in the PCR test is people test for the virus later on when the infection has already developed.

Swab tests can only find the virus and detect them in the earlier phases of infection, which means you should get tested as soon as you develop all the major symptoms.

Testing Is Only for Healthcare Workers

By no means is testing limited to a specific group of people, with even children being legible to get tested. Anyone suffering from the major symptoms of COVID-19 is recommended to get tested immediately. Whether you’re down with fever, have caught a cough, or you have experienced a change or loss in taste and smell, we recommend that you schedule a Covid-19 test right away.

It’s also recommended that you begin to isolate yourself if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.

Getting Tested Requires Extensive Traveling

One of the biggest misconceptions around Covid -19 testing is that it isn’t readily available. The reality is that most medical facilities, laboratories, and major public places are providing COVID-19 testing. In fact, you can even get in touch with various testing facilities to book a session for easy and reliable testing. These include corporate group testing, production testing, and at home testing.

Rather than you having to travel for a Covid-19 tests, most testing companies will offer to set up their own Covid-19 testing facilities at your premises.

Group COVID-19 testing can help screen and curb rapid transmission of the novel coronavirus. From schools, hospitals, and factories to corporate workplaces and production houses, you can get group testing services in Miami.

group COVID-19 test consists of several people pooling samples for a same day or next day RT-PCR test. If no person in the group is infected, the result comes out negative.

However, even if one person is COVID-19 positive, the entire result will be positive.

Group testing is an excellent way to curb the virus spread at workplaces. It helps organizations save time and money. By opting for an optimized group testing service in Miami, you can:

  • Estimate the prevalence of COVID-19 in your community

  • Encourage negative-tested groups to resume work activities

  • Manage COVID-19 cases proactively

The COVID-19 situation is still quite uncertain. Therefore, group testing has become a vital part of every organization’s COVID response policy.

Let’s find out about some other benefits of group COVID tests.

What is a Real Time RT–PCR?

Group COVID tests have proven successful in curbing the demand-supply gap in COVID testing resources. People have to wait weeks before getting their test results. This ultimately results in frustration and a higher risk of disease transmission.

As workplaces and restaurants reopen, a group testing service can be highly beneficial in tracing, tracking, and isolating COVID-positive people.

Cost-Efficient

Also known as pooled testing, a group COVID testing service uses a single test that’s administered to the entire group of people. Getting each individual tested with a separate testing kit is far more expensive than a group test.

The group testing scheme dates back to 1943. It was first used on WWII soldiers to detect syphilis cases. Today, we see it performing exceptionally well for tracking diseases like the Avian Flu.

The Bottom Line

COVID-19 timely prevention depends on the efficiency of testing services. Conventional testing won’t suffice if the government wants to reopen schools, offices, and mass trade at a global level. The Food and Drug Authority has also stated that using group COVID-19 testing, we can significantly increase mass testing numbers. And this can inversely impact the rate of transmission. Moreover, the time and expense aspects of group COVID tests outweigh it potential drawbacks.

Testing has played a significant role in protecting communities from rapid transmission.

Different types of COVID tests give different results. Our main focus today is on RT-PCR and antigen tests. These two types are the most commonly used COVID testing strategies. However, their reports may be a bit hard to understand.

Types of Tests Used to Detect the SARS-CoV-2

Currently, two types of COVID-19 tests that have proven to be highly effective in detecting COVID-19 include:

RT-PCR

RT-PCR, or the Gold Standard for COVID testing, is the most accurate test available today. There are two sub-types of RT-PCR: same day and next day test. However, the traditional PCR may take up to 72 hours, or even longer. The duration of your test result depends on the complexity and number of samples being analyzed.

Antigen tests

Antigen tests are faster but less accurate than RT-PCR. The time efficiency of an antigen test may affect the test result. A person carrying COVID-19 might not test positive in the early transmission days, thereby increasing the risk of virus transmission.

Breaking Down the Results

Here’s a complete list of possible COVID-19 test results and what they mean:

SARS-CoV-2 RNA Detected

If your RT_PCR reports states SARS-CoV-2 RNA detected, it means you’re positive. This shows that your sample contains viral RNA that caused the COVID-19 infection.

In this case, isolate yourself as soon as possible. Monitor your symptoms and stay in touch with your doctor via telemedicine platform. You may end your isolation if your symptoms alleviate and the last time you experienced fever or cough was at least 10 days ago.

SARS-CoV-2 RNA Not Detected

If you report says SARS-CoV-2 RNA not detected, it means you’re negative. Your sample did not contain any particles of the viral RNA. You are, however, still recommended to wear masks, practice social distancing, and maintain personal hygiene.

COVID-19 Antibody Test Result

An antibody test is used to detect whether a person has had COVID-19 in the past. It doesn’t tell whether you have an infection right now. However, an antibody test can be very helpful in determining the presence of antibodies.

Typically, COVID-19 antibodies develop in the human body after fourteen days of contracting the virus. A positive result indicates that you’ve had an infection before and you have antibodies in your blood. Whereas, a negative result suggests that you’ve not contracted COVID-19 in the past; hence there are no antibodies in your blood.

2021 brought a lot of positive COVID-related news to the fore. Thankfully, vaccines started rolling out, and Americans are getting their jabs as we speak! This also meant that traveling both internationally and domestically became a lot easier for vaccinated individuals. This is definitely good news for travel enthusiasts who were confined to their homes for the past year and a half.

However, the threat hasn’t gone away, and you still need to be cautious. Here are some of the considerations:

International traveling

As for those who have had COVID19 during the past three months, they need to show documentation of recovery and negative test results in order to travel to the US. Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to get retested for COVID after you arrive in the US—unless you have some symptoms. According to the CDC, you can test positive for COVID19 again for up to three months, but you won’t be infectious during this time.

Suppose you wish to travel outside of the US and are unaware of the travel regulations. In that case, we recommend reaching out to your destination’s Ministry of Health or Office of Foreign Affairs. The US Department of State might be able to help you out.

Domestic traveling

The CDC recommends delaying all sorts of unnecessary travel if you’re not fully vaccinated as of yet. You can only travel safely after you’ve had your jab from an FDA-authorized vaccine.

If you’re not vaccinated, you need to get tested at least 1 to 3 days before the trip. The CDC also recommends wearing your mask at all times, whether you’re traveling via buses, trains, planes, or any other mode of public transportation. Keep on washing or sanitization your hands as frequently as you can. Maintain social distancing while you’re traveling and avoid crowds.

After you’ve reached your destination, it’s recommended to get retested around 3 to 5 days after traveling. Even if you test negative, we still recommend self-quarantine for around a week. Self-monitor your symptoms during this time.

If you’re vaccinated, you still need to follow the physical distancing guidelines and practice hand hygiene.

Good Hearts Testing aims to make traveling within and outside the US a lot easier for you. If you’ve got to catch a flight the next day, we would be glad to arrange a same-day PCR test for you. Book an appointment if you’re in Miami.

As the pandemic has progressed, COVID testing has become a lot more accessible, affordable, and reliable. Thanks to the advent of scientific technology, you can even request same-day PCR test results—a process that once took around two days.

However, there is still a lot of confusion about when to get tested for COVID.

Let’s address some of these queries:

Do monitor your symptoms

Do monitor your health before getting tested. Watch out for any symptoms of COVID19. If you have a fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, or shortness of breath, get tested immediately.

If you don’t have any symptoms but have been in contact with a potentially infected person, there are two ways to go about it:

  • You isolate yourself and wait it out. Stay in quarantine for around ten days to see if you’ve been infected.

  • Get tested if you need to get back to work immediately and the workplace requires a test.

In most cases, waiting it out is a better option since most tests are only effective if you’re showing symptoms. You don’t want to get tested too early and get a false negative.

Do monitor your symptoms

Suppose you’ve traveled back from another state and have immediately tested negative upon landing. We still recommend you observe self-quarantine for around a week. This is because, at times, it takes several days before your symptoms start showing up. However, you can carry on the infection if you’re a carrier.

Do monitor your symptoms

Don’t end your isolation until you test negative again. Even if you feel like you’re getting better and on the road to recovery, it might be too soon to leave your room and be around your family again. Don’t engage in any guesswork and assume that you’ve recovered.

Get retested! You’re only safe to be around your family after you’ve tested negative. We recommend getting retested ten days after the first onset of the symptoms. You can also get a second test done if you haven’t experienced any symptoms for around 24 hours. Seek your healthcare provider’s advice in this case.

Good Hearts Testing offers same-day PCR, antigen, and antibody testing in Miami for individuals and large corporate groups. Other than in-office testing, we would also be glad to visit your home/office to conduct your test. Book your appointment now, and we will get back to you.

The most accurate COVID-19 test is the PCR test; the complete form is a polymerase chain reaction test. It’s a reliable COVID test for diagnosing whether a person has an active SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The PCR test is considered the gold standard test so let’s look at more details about the test and how it is performed.

What Is the PCR Test?

A PCR test is conducted to detect certain genetic material or RNA from a virus and see if that virus is present in the body. The test comes under the category of molecular tests and is used to find out if a person is currently infected at the time when the sample was collected.

To conduct the PCR test, the genetic material of the virus is isolated and then copied multiple times. This genetic material is used to identify traces of the virus, and the copying process allows the test to detect even the smallest trace of the virus in the sample.

Since the PCR test is more accurate than other tests, you might be asked to take this test by health care professionals if you show symptoms of COVID-19 or if you’ve been in close contact with someone who tested positive for the virus.

In other cases, a medical practitioner might ask you to take a molecular test after you’ve taken a rapid antigen test to confirm the results.

How Is the Test Performed?

The PCR test is performed by collecting a small sample from either the nose or the throat of a person. If your medical professional is taking a swab from your nose, they will insert a small cotton bud into one of your nostrils, leave it in place for a few seconds, then turn it one or two times to ensure the sample is collected. Sometimes, the healthcare providers insert the swab into both nostrils to ascertain that the cotton has absorbed the fluid sample.

Some people feel slight discomfort or pain during the swab test, especially if the cotton needs to be inserted deeper into the nostril to reach the nasopharynx, an area behind the nose.

The test may make your eyes water or cause you to flinch or gag, and these are all normal reactions. The test only takes a few minutes, and there are no lasting side effects or pain.

Specific molecular tests such as the rapid antigen test can also collect a fluid sample from a person’s saliva. This kind of test requires you to spit into a test tube until a sufficient quantity of saliva is collected.

Understanding the Test Results

The turnaround time for the PCR test depends on the testing center, the laboratory, or the hospital where the test was performed. It can be anywhere between 30 minutes to three working days.

The test result will be either positive or negative. If it’s positive, this means you have an active SARS-CoV-2 infection and need to self-isolate as per FDA regulations. If the test is negative, you are clear of any genetic materials in your body, and you don’t have COVID-19.
